The Kamchatka Peninsula lies in easternmost Russia.

Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula is a land of superlatives. It is one of the most volcanologically active regions on Earth. It has the world's densest population of brown bears. Next to Yellowstone National Park, it has the largest geyser field on the planet. The list goes on. In this slide show, see what distinguishes this California-sized dagger of land poking into the northwest Pacific from anywhere else.

Christopher Knight Christopher Knight has photographed for the National Geographic and many other magazines. He is also a Harvard-trained architect, a sailor who has twice crossed the Atlantic, and the founder of the New Film Company, which has produced numerous documentaries, among them "A Yankee in Kamchatka." He shot these photographs on a trip to Kamchatka in 1990.
