Kamchatkans load the pieces of a prefabricated wooden hut, its logs numbered to simplify construction, into an Aeroflot MI8 helicopter. These bus-sized helicopters are the workhorses of Kamchatka transport, as roads on the peninsula are few and poorly maintained. Clamshell doors in the rear enable workers to load large pieces of cargo, and the twin turbine engines can lift huge weights. Most pilots learned their skills in the Russian military, which flies the same type of helicopter. The military maintains a significant presence on the strategically placed peninsula, which is home to Russia's Pacific nuclear submarine fleet.
