The earth seems to smolder here in the Valley of the Geysers, part of Kronotsky State Biosphere Reserve. Like Yellowstone, this reserve features hundreds of active geysers and hotsprings. There is pressure to develop geothermal energy fields here, but so far conservation has prevailed. Russian officials have developed the area with hiking trails, one of which crosses the bridge seen in this picture, and the river runs hot enough to make pleasant bathing if you don't mind hordes of hungry mosquitoes.
