A Koryak woman stands in her tent home at a Koryak base camp, where reindeer herders spend the winter. Rubber boots and reindeer-hide clothing dry over a low fire, whose smoke wafts through the hole in the top, as in Native American tepees. The woman bears the Asian/Inuit features common to the ethnic peoples who have long inhabited Kamchatka. The Koryaks' independent lifestyle resisted collectivization during the Soviet period, and their culture has survived quite intact.
