A trapper named Vladimir stands with his wife and children in front of their home near Petropavlovsk. Vladimir spends six months of the year away, trapping sable in southern Kamchatka for the hunting cooperative. He traps during winter, as the animals' pelts are white at that time of year, and white fur fetches a higher price. Vladimir considers himself fortunate to live in his own freestanding home rather than in an apartment block. The vegetable garden visible in the foreground serves as the family's only source of fresh produce.
