Sharks
John D. Stevens, consulting editor
Facts on File Publications, 1987
A colorfully illustrated, large-format book on shark distribution, biology, senses, behavior, ecology, attacks, and myths—in short, the gamut.
Sharks of the World
by Leonard J.V. Compagno
FAO Species Catalogue/The United Nations Development Programme, 1984

The Natural History of Sharks
by Thomas H. Lineaweaver III and Richard H. Backus
Lippincott, 1970

Though slightly outdated, this book combines rigorous scientific information with vivid anecdotes of shark attacks (including some gruesome photos) and other experiences with sharks.

Trejos (San Jose, Costa Rica), 1992
In Spanish and English, this coffee-table-style book about Cocos was a labor of love by a writer whose family has a long history with the island. Its two parts, one on treasure and the other on the undersea world, is lavishly illustrated with old maps, photos of the island and erstwhile visitors, and views of undersea life.
Get Real
Here's your chance to work side-by-side with Dr. Samuel "Sonny" Gruber, perhaps the world's foremost
shark expert. Gruber has been studying lemon sharks in Bimini Lagoon for decades, and next summer he
returns with his 14th season of Earthwatch volunteers to continue the work. To see if lemon sharks
show fidelity to a home site, he will transplant lemon sharks from Bimini Lagoon to nearby Cat Kay—and vice verse—and track them to see if they return home. During the project, which takes place
late June through early August 1999, Gruber will also initiate a basic biology and physiology study
of eagle rays, about which little is known. For details, call Kathy White at the Earthwatch
Institute, (800) 776-0188.
