Aptly named after the Latin word igneus ("fire-red"), Masdevallia
ignea strikes a vivid, almost fluorescent pose. This orchid species grows
terrestrially in the highest and coolest forests of eastern Colombia and often
defies attempts at cultivation, because its favored living conditions are
difficult to replicate. Terrestrial orchids, which grow in the ground, are
rare. Most orchids grow on trees (epiphytes) or on rocks (lithophytes).
