Iran
Iran has been a member of the NPT since 1970, but it may be close to possessing nuclear weapons in violation of the treaty. Iran's long-standing conflict with Iraq, its quest to compete with other countries in the Persian Gulf, and its desire to deter the possible intervention of a major power, such as the U.S., are potential motives for Iran to pursue a nuclear-weapons program.
