What happened at the Princess's funeral?
(back to Reading the Remains)

After covering the corpse in red ochre, the people of Khok Phanom Di wrapped it, along with the grave goods, in beaten-bark cloth to form a single package. Perhaps as an offering, they placed food in a specially dug pit; they may also have feasted. The Princess's grave, like most others at the site, faced east, but it was deeper than most, likely another bow to her status. When they filled in the grave, the mourners mixed in some food remains—perhaps to sustain the deceased on her journey to a supposed afterworld.
