Books
Cigarettes: Anatomy of an Industry from Seed to Smoke by Tara Parker-Pope New York: The New Press, 2001
This incisive, well-researched book by a Wall Street Journal reporter has chapters on cigarette history; business; cultivation, packaging, and distribution; marketing and advertising; public health; and the future. See our excerpt, "Safer" Cigarettes: A History.

Smokescreen: The Truth Behind the Tobacco Industry Coverup by Philip J. Hilts Reading, Mass: Addison-Wesley, 1996
Hilts, a New York Times science and health reporter, begins his hard-hitting tale in 1953, when the public first learned of a possible connection between cigarette smoking and cancer. Pulling no punches, he goes on to lay out in grisly detail how Big Tobacco has conspired for decades to mislead consumers, target youth, and browbeat critics.

Smoking: The Artificial Passion by David Krogh Oxford: W.H. Freeman & Co., 1991
Objective in style, nonjudgmental in tone, this intelligent book delves into the social, psychological, and physical reasons people smoke. It also offers sound suggestions on how to quit.
