GUEST: I bought her at an auction about six months ago. I know she's French, but other than that I don't know too much about her.

APPRAISER: Okay, are you a doll collector?

GUEST: I have some dolls, not too many French ones, though, just a couple of little ones, because they're hard to find.

APPRAISER: What area of the States did you buy her in?

GUEST: Milwaukee.

APPRAISER: I've always been fascinated with this particular type of doll. What it is, it's a French fashion doll, and it was made by Francois Gaultier in Paris. Your doll is a little bit different, though. I'll show you on the back of her head. Take the wig off, if you look at the back, there's initials right there that says "F.G." Well, that stands for Francois Gaultier, who was this very prolific doll manufacturer in the later 19th century. Your doll, unfortunately, is a fashion doll that was produced around 1967 in Paris. For quite a few years, people have thought that these dolls were dolls that were remade during World War I and were called World War I fashions. They weren't for a fact because when I lived in Paris in the '60s, I knew the man on the flea market that produced them. Then they were shipped to America, sold through certain dealers, and unfortunately, the public got caught on them. Now, they've disappeared over the last 30 years. This one's resurfaced again. Did you pay a lot of money for the doll?

GUEST: Not too overly much, a few hundred.

APPRAISER: A few hundred? Okay, well, if it was an original F.G. fashion, the value of the doll would be between $1,800 to $2,500. This reproduction of the Gaultier fashion, the value is probably between, say, $100 to $200. I'm glad you at least didn't pay $2,000.
