Update: September 19, 2016
During this segment the guest referred to her late-19th-century French fashion doll as “Dolly Varden” in explaining to appraiser Richard Wright that the doll and its elaborate clothing had originally belonged to her great-grandmother. But where exactly does the name Dolly Varden come from? We have Charles Dickens to thank — his 1839 historical novel Barnaby Rudge features a young female character by that name. A few decades later Dolly lent her name to a style of ladies’ dress that was briefly in vogue during the 1870s. An extravagant, multilayered costume reflecting a late-19th-century conception of style during the 1780s (the historical setting of Barnaby Rudge). To say the least, Barnaby Rudge did not turn out to be Dickens’ most enduringly popular novel, and today Dolly Varden is probably more widely recognized as the name of a highly colorful species of trout.
