Giving Rise to the Jet Stream

We've discussed two types of jet streams in this feature: subtropical and polar front. There are other types, too, including the tropical easterly jet streams, which are located over large landmasses, and nighttime, low-level jet streams, which can can form at about 1,000 feet after the sun sets.

For a realistic view of jet streams in North America, see "A Five-Day View of the Jet Stream."
