Another type of jet stream is the polar-front jet stream. This is the type that is associated with winter storms in the U.S. and, in the Southern Hemisphere, resulted in the crash of the plane featured in the NOVA program "Vanished!"

Although its eastward flow has to do with momentum, just like the subtropical jet stream, its winds are generated, for the most part, in another way.
