The result of the cold air masses is that the jet stream, as just described, exists at lower latitudes and tends not to penetrate too deep into the mid latitudes. These are called the subtropical jet streams.

Subtropical jet streams exist at a height of about eight miles and can reach speeds of more than 275 mph.
