The Mauna Kea Observatory is located on Mauna Kea, an extinct volcano and Hawaii's highest mountain. The observatory is home to 11 internationally sponsored telescopes, including the two largest telescopes currently in operation, each bearing a 10-meter primary mirror. Astronomers working with one of the 10-meter telescopes helped to discover that the universe is expanding at an accelerated rate.
