Whales of different species make very similar sounds.

You're right, the above statement is not true. Different species of whales make very different kinds of sounds. Researchers have recently found that deep ocean whales, such as the blue whale and fin whale, generate long, drawn out notes, that when recorded and played at a faster speed, produce very rhythmic sounds. Whales living in shallower waters, like the humpback whale, make sounds that are more melodic.
