Yes, the statement is false. Scientists actually use underwater microphones called hydrophones to listen to the sounds of the deep. During the Cold War, the U.S. Navy installed many hydrophones in the ocean to track Soviet submarines. However, the Navy now lets scientists use these instruments to study whales and other mysteries of the underwater world.
