Books
Sexing the Body: Gender Politics and the Construction of Sexuality by Anne Fausto-Sterling. New York: Basic Books, 2000.
In her meticulously argued and thought-provoking book, Dr. Anne Fausto-Sterling, Professor of Biology and Women's Studies at Brown University, argues that labeling someone a man or a woman is a social decision, not a scientific one. See our excerpt, Two Sexes Are Not Enough.

Lessons From the Intersexed by Suzanne J. Kessler. New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press, 1998.
Using the personal stories of several intersexuals, Suzanne Kessler traces and deconstructs the intriguing history of the medical approach to ambiguous gender during the last century.

Intersex in the Age of Ethics (Ethics in Clinical Medicine Series) by Alice Domurat Dreger, ed. Hagerstown, Maryland: University Publishing Group, 1999.
The authors explore current social and medical attitudes towards ambiguous gender through first-person accounts of intersexuals, their families, and their doctors.
