Primitive germ cells, which will later become either sperm or eggs cells, migrate from the embryo's yolk sac to the genital ridge. Here, they are incorporated into the primary sex cords. The primary sex cords are fingerlike projections that have formed over the previous week.

At this time male and female gonads appear identical.
