Back to One Astronomer's Universe

An estimated 12 billion light-years away, the galaxy indicated in this Hubble image is thought to be the source of a huge gamma-ray burst that was recorded on December 14th, 1997. Some estimates hold that the burst released the energy of several hundred supernovae within a few seconds.
