In addition to tips on bee-friendly gardens and facts about Africanized honeybees ("killer bees"), GEARS offers a concise natural history of the honeybee. Check out the GEARS atlas of the honeybee, which contains astonishing images taken with a scanning electron microscope.

The Wisdom of the Hive: The Social Physiology of Honey Bee Colonies By Thomas D. Seeley. Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1995.
A rigorously scientific yet accessible book by one of the leading bee researchers in the field. Presents findings of years of studying the social and physical structure of hives, focusing on individual bees' fascinating behaviors, such as the waggle dance, and how they contribute to the well-being of the whole. Seeley is also author of Honeybee Ecology: A Study of Adaptation in Social Life (Princeton University Press, 1985).

A well-illustrated primer including chapters on beekeeping, communication, navigation, flower learning, evolution of the dance, and more.

Honey: A Comprehensive Survey Edited by Eva Crane. London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1975.
Published in conjunction with the Bee Research Association, this book features papers by various authors detailing everything you would ever want to know about honey: which flowers make the nectar, which bees make the honey, how they do it, how honey is prepared for market, the history of honey, even wines produced from fermenting honey.

ABC and XYZ of Bee Culture: An Encyclopedia Pertaining to Scientific and Practical Culture of Bees By A. I. Root. Medina, Ohio: A. I. Root Co., 1950.
This classic encyclopedia on beekeeping, first published in 1877 by the man many consider the father of modern beekeeping, is regularly updated. Even if you're not interested in starting an apiary, it makes fascinating reading.

The Honeybee and the Robber: A Moving Picture Book by Eric Carle. New York: Philomel Books, 1981.
An engaging and inventive pop-up book that takes you through one worker bee's quest to get back to her hive.

The Magic School Bus: Inside a Beehive by Joanna Cole, Illustrated by Bruce Degen. New York: Scholastic, 1996.
Ms. Frizzle's students morph into honeybees, and the magic school bus turns into a beehive. This title is a delightful and informative look at life in a hive. Learn about honey making, bee communication, and honeybee society.
