GUEST: Well, these are pieces that my husband gave me for our 25th anniversary.

APPRAISER: That's so nice. Uh, and do you have any idea what he spent on them or...?

GUEST: I don't. I wasn't, I wasn't going to ask him. (both laughing) These are estate pieces from some European woman...

APPRAISER: Mm-hmm.

GUEST: Who had probably been from Hungary.

APPRAISER: Okay. Well, I thought it was interesting when I saw both of them together, because they both really well represent two very different styles and eras. This piece is amethyst and yellow gold, and rose-cut diamonds, and it dates to around about 1860. And this piece is diamonds and platinum, and it dates very firmly in the middle of the Art Deco period, in 1925.

GUEST: Oh!

APPRAISER: Five-and-a-half carats of old European-cut diamonds, and the largest stone, in the center here, is about a carat and a quarter. They're really lively, beautiful stones, and, uh, this all would have been hand work. So I know you mentioned that both pieces you thought to be from Hungary. This piece is not marked, though I do feel that it's likely European. This piece is, in fact, marked, but the marks are so worn away that it's very difficult to tell where the marks come from. But I do believe, also, that it is European. An auction estimate on just the brooch would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $5,500 to $7,500. The bracelet would be $3,000 to $5,000.
