GUEST: Well, my wife and I were newlyweds in Washington, D.C., in the early '70s, and we got interested in antiques and went out on little field trips on the weekend. And so I'd take a trip over to Vermont, I saw this box and I fell in love with it and had it in my house ever since then.

APPRAISER: This box dates probably around 1830 to 1840. The thing that I like most about it is the condition. The paint is really wonderful, all of the decoration is intact, which is very unusual, and the other great thing about this box is that it has a flat top. Most of the boxes have domed tops, and customers really don't like them as well because they like to buy these and stack them up and get a graduated set. This one would fit right in. It has the wonderful snipe hinges, which you can see here, which is typical of the New England boxes and it also has dovetail construction. What did you pay for it when you bought it?

GUEST: I recall around $400.

APPRAISER: Well, I would say today at auction, it would easily bring between $2,000 and $4,000.

GUEST: Wow. Well, maybe my kids will like it better now.

APPRAISER: I hope so. You can tell them.
