GUEST: We live in Minneapolis, and my sons and I got this at an estate sale just outside of the city. We bought it for $250.
APPRAISER: Well, this is really a nice magic lantern. Most of them are made by a company like Ernst Plank. And they're fairly easy to find. You pointed out that right here has "J.F."
GUEST: Yup, it's the only markings we found on it.
APPRAISER: Yeah, well, that means this is a Johan Falk, made in Germany. And it is really charming with the ceramic panels, hand-painted flower decorations on the sides and the front. The run-of-the-mill Plank magic lanterns can be $200, $300, $400. This is another kettle of fish.
GUEST: Oh.
APPRAISER: Last one of these I saw sell at auction in Europe was something in the range of 4,800 euro, which is, I think, around $6,500.
GUEST: Wow!
APPRAISER: I need to go to those garage sales you're going to.
GUEST: Anytime, you're welcome to join us.
APPRAISER: Okay, thank you.
