GUEST: My grandmother used this as her sewing basket. It's a Chitimacha Indian basket. They were the tribe in the area where she lived in South Louisiana, close to the coast, and they were wonderful basket makers and often sold the baskets to church circles, other groups there, and so I presume that's where she got it.
APPRAISER: It's Chitimacha, down towards the coast, and they call these "wallets." These are some of the greatest split cane baskets made in North America. But it comes apart, and if you look inside, it's a different basket. It's called a double-woven basket and they're quite incredible and they're not easy to make. Looks like it was probably made in the '20s. If this came up for an auction, especially in this part of the country, $800 to $1,000.
