GUEST: I bought it at a local auction house probably about 50 miles west of Palm Springs. I believe I paid about $400 for the basket.

APPRAISER: And what did you know about it?

GUEST: Um, well I know I like it. A lot. I believe it's a basket from Southern California, maybe even from the local area, but that's essentially all I know.

APPRAISER: Well, I think you're very close in your figuring that it's a Southern California basket. And I would say it's right from this area.

GUEST: Oh, wow.

APPRAISER: This particular weaver I think it might be someone whose name is Arenas who is from this area.

GUEST: So it sounds like it's a very local basket.

APPRAISER: I would say so.

GUEST: In fact, there's a street in Palm Springs called Arenas, so, yes...

APPRAISER: Oh, really? That is wonderful. Wow. The basket, it's a mission. The tucked stitches on the outside of the basket, it is the giveaway for the mission baskets. I mean, it's almost spirals all the way around the basket. You never usually see anything like that, it's wonderful. This is is the diamondback rattlesnake design, which they did a lot of in this area. It's the orange juncus, and then the black juncus is the dyed juncus. Then you have a little bit of sumac in here, which is the white. I would put an insurance value of $1,500.
