GUEST: My dad was, at the time, dating a young lady whose father was well-to-do and she tried to keep my dad, I guess, as her boyfriend, but it didn't work. He kept the plates, left her and went to New York and married my mom.
APPRAISER: So a woman was trying to woo your dad.
GUEST: Indeed she was.
APPRAISER: And she failed miserably, even though she gave your dad the horseshoes to the 1939 to 1940 Kentucky Derby winners. '39 was Johnstown and '40 was Gallahadion. Johnstown, his trainer was Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons, who was among the most renowned, if not arguably the most renowned trainer. He's won 2,500 or so individual races. He's trained innumerable Triple Crown winners. His accolades go on and on. This was his pride and joy that year. I think for the pair as a set, at auction this has a value of about $2,000 to $3,000.
GUEST: Okay.
APPRAISER: Really neat item.
GUEST: Thank you.
