GUEST: I believe it's a pre-Detroit Tigers team picture. It belonged to my dad and I inherited it from him. He got it for mowing grass.

APPRAISER: He got it for mowing grass?

GUEST: Yes.

APPRAISER: When?

GUEST: Probably '55 or '56.

APPRAISER: Now, would you have taken the cash?

GUEST: (laughs) Probably, yes.

APPRAISER: It's not pre-Tigers. It's during the Tigers' heyday, as a matter of fact, because the copyright in this is 1909. The Detroit Tigers of 1907 to 1909 were one of the great teams. They were one of the greatest teams never to win a World Series. The leader of the team is Ty Cobb, right here, but all was not happy on the Detroit Tigers team. If you hear "Ty Cobb," you've heard about him as, what, a great ball player, but maybe a little irascible, a little cranky, known for spikes high. Well, there are men on this team that did not like him and did not get along with him at all. Very few people know that Ty Cobb's mother accidentally killed his father in 1905. And Ty Cobb, he came up to the Tigers that same year. So he was a young kid. And these guys, three of them, made his life miserable for the next few years. One is another Hall-of-Famer named Sam "Wahoo" Crawford. Then we have Matty McIntire, who was a fellow outfielder, and we have Ed Killian. They did everything from banging his hats in, they helped cause fights for him. So there was a lot of drama that took place on this team. Despite that, they made it to the World Series three times. They lost in seven games to the Pirates in 1909. And then things calmed down. Killian and McIntyre left the team. Crawford and Cobb kind of learned to work together. But what happened was, as things calmed down, they stopped making it to the World Series and they had a drought up until 1935. If I were going to insure this photo, because it's a rare photo, I'd insure it for about $5,000.

GUEST: Very nice.

APPRAISER: So I think that's a pretty good payment for mowing the lawn.

GUEST: I think so, too.
