The movies become increasingly popular—and special effects more elaborate—as sophisticated moviegoers demand bigger and better.

1916
Frank Williams invents a travelling matte system to allow moving characters photographed against a monochromatic background to be separated as an element and combined with a different background. The technique is later refined as blue-screen photography.
