The cortical cords begin to break up into isolated cell clusters. The cords surround the primitive germ cells, forming ovarian follicles.
The follicles replicate through mitosis, producing millions of copies. However, by the time of birth, many of the follicles will have degenerated, leaving about two million. These remaining follicles will enlarge to form the primitive eggs cells. No new egg cells will be produced after birth.
