As shown in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/free-for-all\/\">Free For All: The Public Library<\/a><\/em>, libraries currently face the twin threats of budget cuts and a wave of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/arts\/attempts-to-ban-books-are-at-an-all-time-high-these-librarians-are-fighting-back\">censorship<\/a>. So it\u2019s more important than ever to explain why the nation needs them.<\/p>\n<p>Any answer must begin, of course, with books. In fact, <em>Free For All<\/em> is just the latest in a recent spate of books and movies\u2014including Susan Orlean\u2019s <em>The Library Book<\/em> and Frederick Wiseman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/ex-libris-new-york-public-library-qm8c6u\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Ex Libris: The New York Public Library,<\/em><\/a> plus the more fantastical TV show <em>The Librarians<\/em>\u2014that attempt to capture the multifaceted role that a good library plays in its community.<\/p>\n<p>And while it\u2019s easy for advocates to fall back on important-but-abstract concepts like community, democracy, and public space, the (usually free!) benefits that libraries provide to any cardholder can be far more concrete.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Libraries across the U.S. offer more than books with new services\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ROeRcOpxGEQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>So, without further ado, here&#8217;s a list of all the other things you can find at most libraries:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>A quiet place to work: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bringing my laptop to a coffee shop feels more challenging than ever, thanks to a growing number of stores that (understandably) impose time limits, ban laptops outright, or offer counter service only. Libraries are an easy alternative, no purchase required. Some also host job fairs, provide one-on-one coaching, or even connect people to apprenticeships and vocational training.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>Help with your taxes: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The next time April 15 rolls around, you can find assistance at your local library. Some public libraries host individual appointments with tax experts, while many others partner with volunteer organizations that will actually prepare your taxes for you. At the Cambridge, Massachusetts, public library you can take a class in using a 3D printer or even <a href=\"https:\/\/cambridgepl.libcal.com\/event\/14431026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read to a dog<\/a>! There are plenty of book clubs that are not library-affiliated, but libraries can bring together diverse groups of readers while also offering easy access to meeting space and, of course, books. Some clubs focus on specific genres (like romance, fantasy, or science fiction), while others go broader, ranging across a variety of notable and relevant titles.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t like the idea of being told what to read, there are groups that offer more flexibility\u2014like the <a href=\"https:\/\/newtonlibraries.org\/book_club\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stone Soup Book Club<\/a> in Georgia\u2019s Newton County, which lets you choose any book you want based on a suggested author or topic. For example, cardholders at any of the three New York City public library systems have access to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.culturepass.nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Culture Pass<\/a>, where they can sign up for free tickets to everything from the American Museum of Natural History to the public gardens at Wave Hill.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>A place to stay cool: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During the summer, many libraries serve as designated cooling stations where anyone without air conditioning can find relief. Philadelphia recently began relying more on <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/philadelphia-13-cooling-centers-next-heat-emergency-libraries-rec-centers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">libraries and rec centers<\/a> (and less on parked city buses) to keep its residents cool, while the library system in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.louisianafirstnews.com\/news\/local-news\/east-baton-rouge-parish\/east-baton-rouge-parish-libraries-become-resource-cooling-centers-during-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">East Baton Rouge is also using its bookmobile<\/a> to bring air conditioning and charging stations to neighborhoods hit by hurricanes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>Someone who will read to your kids: <\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There\u2019s a good chance your very first memory of the library is of a grown-up reading a picture book aloud to a group of (hopefully) rapt young children. Even as its nontraditional iterations have come <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drag_Queen_Story_Hour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">under political fire<\/a>, storytime remains a durable tradition, both for instilling a love of reading, and for giving young parents a little break from reading their child\u2019s favorite book for the tenth, twentieth, or hundredth time in a row.
