News sites are even obsessed with how neurodivergent disorders are being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a40787937\/adhd-autism-in-women-tiktok-self-diagnosis-neurodivergence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-diagnosed on the platform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the disabled community who really taps into TikTok, however, disability hashtags are often the one safe haven to explore their disabilities in an otherwise ableist world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how does it get so misconstrued?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#ADHD has over 16.4 billion views on TikTok, with #ADHDtiktok not far behind at 4.9 billion. It&#8217;s worryingly easy to go down a TikTok rabbit hole; as soon as you watch one video, thousands more pop up to replace it on your \u201cFor You\u201d page. With so many videos under ADHD hashtags, it\u2019s likely one will show up to you, especially if you\u2019re interested in conversations around mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD being digested into small, bite-sized videos is both ironic and means that \u201coverdiagnosis\u201d is a common point of discussion. There is something to be said for simplifying complex neurological disorders, but for many, it&#8217;s a way to find connection, support, and to explore the valid process of self-diagnosis as a starting point\u2014not an endpoint.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Destigmatizing Disabled People with #DisabledAndCute<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite people with disabilities constituting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/disabilityandhealth\/infographic-disability-impacts-all.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-quarter of the population in the U.S.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they are often discriminated against, ostracized, and lonely, especially for those highly vulnerable people who may feel as if the world has forgotten that COVID-19 can still be fatal for them. The enormous cross-section of disability videos on TikTok helps to normalize people with disabilities.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media has often been a source of engagement for disabled people, with popular accounts such as deafblind activist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/habengirma.com\/\"><b>Haben Girma<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regularly seeing thousands of likes on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/habengirma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whilst <\/span><b>Keah Brown<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launched the hashtag #DisabledAndCute on Twitter (now popular on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/DisabledAndCute\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TikTok<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well) in 2017 to destigmatize disabled people in fashion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/DisabledAndCute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26040 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2022-11-11-at-11.28.36-AM.png\" alt=\"a diverse group of &quot;disabled and cute&quot; hashtag content creators featured on TikTok\" width=\"2330\" height=\"1180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dipsy.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2022-11-11-at-11.28.36-AM.png 2330w, https:\/\/dipsy.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2022-11-11-at-11.28.36-AM-600x304.png 600w, https:\/\/dipsy.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2022-11-11-at-11.28.36-AM-1280x648.png 1280w, https:\/\/dipsy.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2022-11-11-at-11.28.36-AM-768x389.png 768w, https:\/\/dipsy.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2022-11-11-at-11.28.36-AM-1536x778.png 1536w, https:\/\/dipsy.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2022-11-11-at-11.28.36-AM-2048x1037.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2330px) 100vw, 2330px\" \/><\/a>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically on TikTok, however, there is a way to be instrumental in teaching the next generation about disability.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ads.tiktok.com\/business\/creativecenter\/inspiration\/popular\/hashtag\/pc\/en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifty-six percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people viewing disabled TikToker content are between the ages of 18 and 24, and 96 percent of the rest of these people are under the age of 35.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that the stereotyped version of disability\u2014typically targeted on social media and in ads toward an older demographic, as if disability is something that happens primarily with old age\u2014is rarely seen on TikTok. And with over 15 percent of the world&#8217;s population being disabled, and long COVID adding to the number with 1.2 million newly disabled people, this younger audience is providing a fresh perspective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Marie Dagenais-Lewis<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known on TikTok as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@r.a.r.e.advoc8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>@r.a.r.e.advoc8<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <strong>Marie Dagenais-Lewis<\/strong> shares informative videos about the history of ableism and rare diseases, as well as her own artwork and makeup processes. She\u2019s noticed that TikTokers lean toward educating a younger audience. This has made the platform not only a place for information\u2014for instance, &#8220;spoonie hacks,&#8221; a term used to refer to life hacks for the chronic illness community, can be seen often on Marie\u2019s TikTok\u2014but also a place for disabled people to make a living.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" style=\"max-width: 605px; min-width: 325px;\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@r.a.r.e.advoc8\/video\/7142875883727080750\" data-video-id=\"7142875883727080750\">\n<section><a title=\"@r.a.r.e.advoc8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@r.a.r.e.advoc8?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@r.a.r.e.advoc8<\/a> It\u2019s hateful that we have to experience the headlines like this. When <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@april_lockhart\"><b>April Lockhart<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posted her first video on TikTok, she didn\u2019t expect a growing audience to identify with her. Earlier this year, she created a challenge to post 30 videos for a month curating different outfits, simply for fun. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" style=\"max-width: 605px; min-width: 325px;\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@april_lockhart\/video\/7160751748964175150\" data-video-id=\"7160751748964175150\">\n<section><a title=\"@april_lockhart\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@april_lockhart?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@april_lockhart<\/a> modeling all the @aerie gifts i\u2019ll be buying my sister &amp; friends \ud83c\udf81\ud83c\udf84\ud83e\uddd1\u200d\ud83c\udf84 <a title=\"aeriepartner\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/aeriepartner?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#AeriePartner<\/a> <a title=\"aeriereal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/aeriereal?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#AerieREAL<\/a> <a title=\"\u266c original sound - aerie\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/original-sound-aerie-7160700668502608683?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u266c original sound &#8211; aerie<\/a><\/section>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, the 27-year-old has gone on to create makeup videos, interior design videos, and other style updates, racking up to half a million views for her \u201cNormalizing Disabled Fashun Girlies in your Feed\u201d videos over the month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">April, who was born with amniotic band syndrome, which means she doesn\u2019t have a left hand, uses the TikTok space to spotlight her disability, showing that disabled people can also be seen in popular fashion and makeup trends without it becoming about inspiration. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a huge market for content that engages with giving disabled people a voice, and April is just one of hundreds who are showing that disabled creators deserve a space on the platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Imani Barbarin a.k.a. @crutches_and_spice<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>Imani Barbarin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@crutches_and_spice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@crutches_and_spice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the TikTok platform, has received over 33.8 million likes on TikTok. In a recent video, she discusses disabled \u201cinfluencers,\u201d and the problem with making it seem, because there are prominent disabled people on this app, as if ableist and problematic experiences do not happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" style=\"max-width: 605px; min-width: 325px;\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@crutches_and_spice\/video\/7160781233163734318\" data-video-id=\"7160781233163734318\">\n<section><a title=\"@crutches_and_spice\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@crutches_and_spice?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@crutches_and_spice<\/a> Some people will never be better for disabled people until they are us. <a title=\"disability\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/disability?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#disability<\/a> <a title=\"influencersinthewild\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/influencersinthewild?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#influencersinthewild<\/a> <a title=\"influence\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/influence?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#influence<\/a> <a title=\"\u266c original sound - Crutches&amp;Spice \u267f\ufe0f :\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/original-sound-7160781275048102702?refer=embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u266c original sound &#8211; Crutches&amp;Spice \u267f\ufe0f :<\/a><\/section>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m on this app every single day and there\u2019s always one or two stories about influencers acting poorly, basically feeling entitled to spaces or products, right?&#8221; Imani begins on the video, speaking to the camera. &#8220;The other day I was asked about the nature of being an influencer with a disability, and keep in mind I\u2019ve been doing online work and advocacy for about ten years, and never really felt at home with the term &#8216;influencer,&#8217; but I\u2019m answering the question because it\u2019s a fascinating one.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She continued, \u201cWhilst some abled influencers are fighting for their ability to get things and places, disabled people, in contrast, are just trying to get people to treat us better. And while entry to these spaces for a lot of these influencers is a perk, for us, it is our right, and can mean the difference between actually living our lives or being discarded by society.&#8221; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@crutches_and_spice\/video\/7160781233163734318?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;lang=en\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch\/hear the rest here<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.]<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TikTok is not the end line for the disabled community, but for many, especially the younger generations, it is a place for their self-advocacy and unpacking internalized ableism to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">start<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>How TikTok Needs to Improve<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marie Dagenais-Lewis believes that TikTok has the ability to be pivotal in the mission to bring about equal rights for disabled people, but that the app itself needs to try harder to address these issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have the room to really improve life for the disabled with TikTok,&#8221; she says. &#8220;[However,] with the rise of disability advocates on social media whilst influencer culture is also on the rise, we open ourselves up to a lot of medical gaslighting and ableism.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve personally experienced quite a few people minimizing and undermining my work as an anti-ableist chronic illness advocate because \u2018I just want to get famous on the internet&#8217;,&#8221; she continues. &#8220;While TikTok is a powerful tool for us advocates to really help create the awareness, representation, and acceptance that is needed for us to live fulfilling lives, the fact that we are in an ableist society that sees people like myself as &#8216;faking for attention&#8217; is something that makes it much harder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mutual aid, support, and information specific to individual disabilities have helped disabled people find a home and representation on the app, and these do not necessarily exist elsewhere.
