Here are five more independent papers that have managed to survive despite a global pandemic, takeovers of news chains by private equity, and the struggle to compete for online ad dollars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What sets these publications apart from their chain-owned counterparts is that, even before the pandemic, all of them kept their role as community servants at the forefront, and they\u2019ve found creative ways to keep going through good times and bad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have an independent newspaper in your community that is still thriving? Shout them out in the comments below.<\/span><\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montereycountyweekly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>Monterey County Weekly<\/i><\/b><\/a> <b>(Seaside, California)<\/b><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/2\/2c\/Monterey_County_Weekly_Logo.png\" width=\"460\" height=\"215\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This independently owned alt-weekly from Seaside, California, is a long-time survivor, serving local readers since 1988. Though covering the local arts and entertainment scene is its economic bread and butter, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weekly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also known for hard-hitting investigative and in-depth reporting, especially as coverage in other local papers has shrunk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGood journalism is good business,\u201d publisher Erik Cushman says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the pandemic shutdown began, readers feared for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weekly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s very existence after nearly a third of the staff was laid off. Yet even on the brink of disaster, the paper survived and is thriving today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weekly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> now has a newsroom staff of nine, more than it\u2019s ever had,&#8221; said editor Sara Rubin.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">But being a nurse isn\u2019t the be-all and end-all for Matsumoto. Her husband, Alfred Sadler, encouraged her to paint after seeing a sketch she made. \u201cHe is an amazing guy,\u201d she says of Sadler.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dnvxQYJGCU\">https:\/\/t.co\/dnvxQYJGCU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Monterey County Weekly (@mcweekly) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mcweekly\/status\/1452394472629682180?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 24, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2020, Cushman moved quickly to what he called \u201cPlan C\u201d: cut staff and print runs even before the shutdown became official, because he knew it would mean cash cows like the entertainment calendar would quickly wither. Advertisers were offered steep discounts and the paper created a daily newsletter, heavily focusing on breaking news for the first time. Soon, with the help of a PPP loan, Cushman was able to hire back staff almost to pre-pandemic levels. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weekly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also started an \u201cInsiders\u201d membership program which now has support from 3,500 readers, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe dropped over 50 percent of our revenue immediately,\u201d Cushman said. \u201cSo we changed our business plan to replace ad revenue with reader revenue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/55zIGICprc\">https:\/\/t.co\/55zIGICprc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Monterey County Weekly (@mcweekly) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mcweekly\/status\/1451609303639486464?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 22, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rubin said she\u2019s proud of the paper\u2019s staff. And this summer, it even invested in a new printing press capable of printing color on every page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The purchase was \u201csurely good news, but it shouldn\u2019t be taken as a sign that the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eagle <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">favors print over digital,\u201d Kennedy told his blog followers. In fact, the publication is heavily promoting online subscriptions.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Eagle received a curious letter in the mail addressed to the editor and written by Reginald Taylor, who wished to inform his dear friends in the Berkshires that he has died. We set out to find out more about Taylor and his life that he wished to &#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0maTQfqPFB\">https:\/\/t.co\/0maTQfqPFB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Berkshire Eagle (@BerkshireEagle) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BerkshireEagle\/status\/1455912464269422603?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 3, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But co-owner Frederic Rutberg recently tried to assure readers that the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eagle<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is still committed to putting out a paper product. \u201cI hope that the substantial investment we are making in print, as evidenced by our purchase of the Magnum printing press, will put those thoughts to bed,\u201d he told readers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rutberg sees his investment as more than a money-making venture\u2014to him, it\u2019s more like an honored duty. \u201cI realize we\u2019re stewards of an important organ of community life,\u201d he said, shortly after he and three friends took the helm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy partners and I saw this as a community service,\u201d Rutberg said. \u201cWe understood that if we improved the quality of the newspaper, we\u2019d be enhancing the quality of life for the community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/\"><b><i>El Tecolote<\/i><\/b><\/a> <b>(San Francisco)<\/b><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"http:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/graphics-51-01-1.png\" alt=\"El Tecolote graphic, red and black with 51 years of community journalism quote\" width=\"850\" height=\"255\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A neighborhood paper mainly serving San Francisco\u2019s Mission District, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Tecolote<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a biweekly newspaper published by the nonprofit Acci\u00f3n Latina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The paper grew out of a class project at San Francisco State University in 1970, spearheaded by journalism professor Juan Gonzalez, who became the paper\u2019s founder and publisher. Even through the pandemic, readers and volunteers have continued to support the paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it has expanded to include an online publication and a weekly podcast called<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/radio-teco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radio Teco<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it still distributes 10,000 copies of its free print edition throughout the greater Bay Area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like other Bay Area neighborhood papers, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Tecolote<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> practices \u201cmission-driven\u201d journalism by advocating for its community. It also publishes investigative stories that have led to threats against Gonzalez\u2019s life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Editor-in-Chief Alexis Terrazas says it\u2019s okay if people want to call <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Tecolote<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advocacy journalism. In the past two decades, it was named the \u201cbest community newspaper in America\u201d by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the National Newspaper Association and Inland Press Association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pilot <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">publishes twice weekly in print, but over the years, it has published a number of regional magazines and even bought a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecountrybookshop.biz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local bookstore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe felt this community would be less without a local bookstore,\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pilot <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">editor John Nagy said. \u201cSo we went out and bought it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The paper also bucks<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2019\/01\/newspapers-cost-more-than-twice-as-much-today-as-they-did-a-decade-ago-and-that-was-a-smart-move-by-publishers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">national trends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by keeping subscription rates affordable\u2014right now it\u2019s $69.55 for a full year. But even more critical to its survival, the paper\u2019s owners aren\u2019t afraid to try creative ideas to help the paper stay afloat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pilot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also operates a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/firstflightagency.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marketing firm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/bruceskorupski\/docs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phone directory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and an arts and culture magazine called<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pinestrawmag.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PineStraw<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal is to diversify revenue, but also to \u201cdiversify our outlook, and diversify our business skills,\u201d Nagy said. \u201cPart of the print industry\u2019s problem today is, they don\u2019t believe in themselves. Publishers like GateHouse, Gannett, McClatchy, Berkshire Hathaway, they\u2019re managing margins.
