In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded the celebration to last the four weeks from September 15th to October 15th. Hispanic Heritage Month commemorates the histories, cultures, and contributions of Latinx people whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central, and South America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To celebrate the occasion, we\u2019ve gathered <strong>eight must-see documentaries<\/strong> to help gain a better understanding of Latinx culture in the United States. These are films that strongly, in their own ways, address the role of Latinx people in shaping American culture, politics, and economics.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Paper Children<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2020)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">documentary<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was produced and directed by Alexandra Codina, whose film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monica &amp; David<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for HBO was nominated for an Emmy. The film showcases a Honduran family\u2019s experience of immigrating to the U.S. and raises awareness about the mistreatment of unaccompanied children by the U.S. government. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annually, thousands of Latin American children flee violence to seek asylum in the U.S. This subject is deeply personal for Codina, whose father was part of a mass exodus of 13,000 unaccompanied children from Cuba in 1962, known as &#8220;Operation Pedro Pan.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Paper Children (Ni\u00f1os de papel) | Inside America\u2019s Overwhelmed Asylum System\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jdsPSkFXrD4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b><i>Latino Vote: Dispatches from the Battleground<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2020)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bernardo Ruiz\u2019s immersive documentary aims to encourage the Latinx community to hit the voting booths. The two-time Emmy nominated documentary filmmaker and producer (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/harvest-season\/\">Harvest Season<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/graduates\/\">The Graduates<\/a><\/em>) followed Latinx community organizers and voters in swing states Nevada, Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania. Latinx voters are expected to be the largest non-white voting group in the 2020 presidential election. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Dear Homeland<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2020)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dearhomelandfilm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claudia Escobar\u2019s lyrical film<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> follows the heartfelt story of Diana Gameros, an immigrant musician from Juarez, Mexico who is undocumented in the States. Gameros overstayed a tourist visa in the U.S. when she was young, attended school, and now cannot return to her homeland. She shares her pain and glory through her political lyrics. In one of her evocative songs, &#8220;Ligerita,&#8221; which means <em>lightweight<\/em>, she croons: &#8220;<i>aliviando mis pesares<\/i>\u00a0(<em>alleviating my sorrow<\/em>).&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"DEAR HOMELAND Trailer\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/368302104?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<p><b><i>Harvest of Empire<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2012)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wendy Thompson-Marquez\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feature-length documentary<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 which won the Imagen Award for Best Documentary Film \u2014 captures the plight of how U.S. intervention in Latin America resulted in Latinos immigrating to the U.S. and is based on the book by award-winning journalist Juan Gonz\u00e1lez. The film analyzes how U.S. economic and military interests sparked waves of migration from the region.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covering U.S. territorial expansion, control of Puerto Rico, the Cuban embargo, and other military operations across Latin America the film sheds light on the truth regarding the events that led many to flee their homelands in search of refuge in the States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>\u00a1Palante, Siempre Palante! The Young Lords <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1996)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iris Morales&#8217; award-winning documentary which aired on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PBS&#8217;s POV<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, depicts how Latinx communities fought for economic and social justice during the civil rights movement, Vietnam War protests, and the women&#8217;s equality movement. The Young Lords were a militant youth group that demanded equality, access, and empowerment for Puerto Ricans and other Latinx groups from Chicago to New York City.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morales utilized archival footage, interviews, and photos to showcase the activities, philosophy, dismantling, and legacy of The Young Lords, the torturous end of the organization, and its inspiring legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See also: The Young Lords as one of the three groups featured in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/documentaries\/the-first-rainbow-coalition\/\"><b><i>The First Rainbow Coalition<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u00a1Pa&#039;lante Siempre Pa&#039;lante! - Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hfxMRBPjBs4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b><i>Mala Mala<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2014)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directors Antonio Santini and Dan Sickles captured the lives of nine trans women in San Juan, Puerto Rico from the streets and clubs in this powerful<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">documentary<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The film follows the transition journey of each person <\/span><span id=\"m_7427669575590523793gmail-docs-internal-guid-bc10e283-7fff-edfb-e91e-27a10d220cb6\"><\/span>and how they\u2019re all involved in the fight for equality\u00a0to foster a greater understanding of the trans community. The subjects open up to share their experiences and the strength of embracing their truest selves.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mala Mala\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tlr8EL-2rPY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b><i>The Hand That Feeds<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2014)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rachel Lears and Robin Blotnick joined forces to produce<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this documentary set in an Upper East Side caf\u00e9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Manhattan, New York. The undocumented immigrant workers who operate the caf\u00e9 are tired of unfair wages, poor work conditions, and abusive management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They band together to fight the exploitation but find limited resources due to their undocumented status until they garner the interest of New Yorkers and Occupy Wall Street protestors.<\/span><b><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Hand That Feeds | Trailer | America ReFramed\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DP3Y9pt-sRo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b><i>The Latino List<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2011)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Timothy Greenfield-Sanders\u2019 documentary features<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16 prominent people from the Latinx community<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.S. who discuss what it\u2019s like to be Latinx in the States.
