He is <strong>currently serving a 7-year jail sentence<\/strong> in relation to an allegedly corrupt and fraudulent military mat\u00e9riel deal between Portugal and Poland.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0&#8220;The thing about politicians is that they\u2019re very much like prostitutes but only more expensive.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VIJAY PRASHAD<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><b>Journalist and Author &#8220;The Poorer Nations&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Vijay Prashad is an <strong>Indian historian, journalist, commentator and intellectual<\/strong>. He is the George and Martha Kellner Chair in South Asian History and Professor of International Studies at Trinity College, after having been the Edward Said Chair at the American University of Beirut. Prashad is the author of seventeen books, including <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No Free Left: The Futures of Indian Communism <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(of which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/books\/books-reviews\/no-free-left-the-futures-of-indian-communism\/article7117614.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Hindu<\/em><\/a> newspaper wrote, &#8220;Prashad\u2019s passion for the subject and his meticulous research combine to show that for the left, new tomorrows await.&#8221;)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0His very politically woke Twitter feed is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vijayprashad\">@vijayprashad<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;[F]or the last fifty years at least, policy has been made based on the assumption of greed. Marta Benavides is a <strong>Salvadoran theologian, ordained minister, permaculturist, educator, and artist<\/strong>. She is one of the last surviving activists from a group of human rights and peace advocates who began their work during the 1970s in a rising climate of repression in Latin America. Since 1992 she has been the director of the <strong>International Institute for Cooperation Amongst Peoples<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the early 1980s, the peace activist and ordained pastor who chose \u201cto live and not die for the revolution\u201d headed the Ecumenical Committee for Humanitarian Aid, a group sponsored by the Archbishop \u00d3scar Romero to provide support to the victims of violence in El Salvador. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/theguardian\/2000\/mar\/23\/features11.g21\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romero\u00a0was assassinated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in 1980.\u00a0Benavides then worked for the next decade to bring an end to the war in her country, and achieve a negotiated settlement under the UN. She was a\u00a0<strong>Nobel Peace Prize<\/strong> nominee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In countries like mine, people have been killed to be quiet. To know that any day, anytime, you\u2019re going to be killed, you don\u2019t know how, but it\u2019s coming.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JEREMY SCAHILL<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><b>Investigative Journalist and Author \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeremy Scahill is a <strong>founding editor<\/strong> of the online news publication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Intercept<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which is both widely regarded and not without<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Intercept#Criticism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> controversies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <strong>author of <\/strong><\/span><strong><i>Blackwater: The Rise of the World\u2019s Most Powerful Mercenary Army<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which won the George Polk Book Award. His book <\/span><strong><i>Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was published by Nation Books in 2013. The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dirtywars.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">documentary film<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the same name, produced, narrated and co-written by Scahill, was released in 2013, including a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and it was nominated for an Academy Award. Sprey was educated at Yale and Cornell where he studied mathematical statistics and operations research. He subsequently worked at Grumman Aircraft as a consulting statistician. From 1966 to 1970 he was a special assistant at the US Office of the Secretary of Defense. There is no doubt about it, Mr. Sprey is a controversial figure, and I do enjoy listening to him largely for entertainment purposes. She was the <strong>first black woman to represent Georgia in the House<\/strong>. While serving in Congress, McKinney: advocated unsealing records pertaining to the CIA&#8217;s role in the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., supported anti-war legislation and introduced articles of impeachment against President George H.W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She left the Democratic Party in September 2007 and in 2008 was the <strong>Green Party\u00a0pick to run for President of the United States<\/strong>, for which she received such disparate <strong>endorsements as Noam Chomsky, Roseanne Barr, rapper M-1, and\u00a0peace activist\u00a0Cindy Sheehan<\/strong>.\u00a0As an activist and speaker, she has opposed US military intervention around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Individuals operating in the shadows and never having their names called are able to leverage the power of the military and the foreign policy apparatus\u00a0for their own personal pecuniary ends.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/middleeastexpert.jpg\" alt=\"Middle East Expert Trita Parsi\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dipsy.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/middleeastexpert.jpg 640w, https:\/\/dipsy.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/middleeastexpert-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TRITA PARSI<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><b>National Iranian American Council, Author <em>Treacherous Alliance\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Losing an Enemy<\/em><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trita Parsi is the <strong>founder and current president of the National Iranian American Council<\/strong>, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization advancing interests of Iranian-American community. Born in Iran, Parsi moved with his family to Sweden at a young age to escape political repression, as his father was an outspoken academic who was jailed both under the reign of the Shah, and later under Ayatollah Khomeini&#8217;s Islamic Republic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parsi holds two Master&#8217;s and as an adult, moved to the U.S.\u00a0to study foreign policy at the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies where he received\u00a0a\u00a0PhD in International Relations. Early in his career Parsi worked for the Swedish Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, addressing human rights in Iran, Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Iraq. Chief of Staff to US Sec. of State,\u00a0<\/b><b>Colin Powell<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lawrence &#8220;Larry&#8221; B. Wilkerson is a <strong>retired United States Army Colonel who served in Vietnam<\/strong> as an observation helicopter pilot and in the US Navy&#8217;s Pacific Command in South Korea, Japan, and Hawaii. He served as chief of staff to General Colin Powell, while Powell was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and later Secretary of State. Wilkerson taught at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island and served as deputy director of the Marine Corps War College at Quantico. Wilkerson has criticized many aspects of the Iraq War, including his own preparation of General Powell&#8217;s presentation to the UN, and has<strong> called Iraq War\u00a0intelligence &#8220;a hoax.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 2px 6px 4px 6px; color: #555555; background-color: #eeeeee; border: #dddddd 2px solid;\"><b>More:<\/b> Not one to mince words, Col. Wilkerson hasn&#8217;t been afraid to criticize current President Trump, and <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/news\/328973-former-army-colonel-ive-never-been-so-concerned-about-us-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said this year<\/a> that he&#8217;s &#8220;never been so concerned, as I am now, for the state of this country and world relations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Quote:<\/strong>\u00a0&#8220;This revolving door keeps the national security elite very small, and very wealthy, and increasing its wealth as it goes up the chain. To the extent that then when you get to the top as Cheney did, then you can become a member of the plutocracy that runs the country too.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CLARE SHORT<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><b>British Minister for International Development (1997-2003)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clare Short is a British politician who was the<strong> Member of Parliamen<\/strong>t from 1983 to 2010 (first as a Labour Party MP, but later as an Independent). She stood down as a Member of Parliament at the 2010 general election. Short was a highly regarded Secretary of State for International Development in the government of Prime Minister Tony Blair from 1997 until her resignation from that post in protest six years later. She has been very critical of Blair, and herself, regarding their role in the Iraq War, and is the author of <em>An Honourable Deception?: New Labour, Iraq, and the Misuse of Power,<\/em>\u00a0(2004). In 2011, Short was elected as Chairwoman of the <strong>Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative<\/strong>, a global standard for the good governance of oil, gas and mineral resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2016\/jun\/20\/clare-short-the-chilcot-report-is-longer-than-the-harry-potter-books-put-together\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Guardian<\/em><\/a>: &#8220;If Iraq was the great tragedy of Blair\u2019s career, it was also, Short concedes, the tragedy of hers. &#8216;But it\u2019s an ongoing tragedy for lots of people who are dead, and a country that\u2019s let down. So compared to the enormity of that, Blair or me are nothing.'&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding: 2px 6px 4px 6px; color: #555555; background-color: #eeeeee; border: #dddddd 2px solid;\"><b>More:<\/b> Short once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/1996\/oct\/17\/labour.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">publicly told colleagues<\/a> that she had been reunited with the son she gave up for adoption 31 years prior.
