{"id":16060,"date":"2017-10-31T13:29:06","date_gmt":"2017-10-31T21:29:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/?post_type=blog&#038;p=16060"},"modified":"2023-09-06T15:31:58","modified_gmt":"2023-09-06T22:31:58","slug":"chasing-trane-playlist-coltrane-and-his-disciples","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/dipsy.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/chasing-trane-playlist-coltrane-and-his-disciples\/","title":{"rendered":"Chasing Trane Playlist: Coltrane and His Disciples"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>By Nick Dedina,<br \/>\nGuest Contributor<\/strong><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drop a needle on a John Coltrane record, hit play on one of his digital playlists, or watch <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/films\/chasing-trane\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chasing Trane<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it\u2019s easy to understand why the saxophonist is universally revered as a musical giant.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ways in which Coltrane influenced jazz are vast. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the saxophonist has also had a more subtle influence on the world of pop music, and on society as a whole. \u2018Trane\u2019s stylistic advancements are key but so was his searching, yet gentle, spirit, his spiritual curiosity, and how he used music to capture unexplainable feelings around our inter-connectivity with each other, the wider world, and the divine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I created this playlist as an accompaniment to <em>Chasing Trane<\/em> and to highlight this influence, to point to some of the many performers past and present whom John Coltrane touched in various ways.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border-radius: 12px;\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/playlist\/5AUzKzsDRaAbfDQPqzaNTM?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>More on the Artists\/Tracks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s young jazz breakout sensation <strong>Kamasi Washington<\/strong> creates\u00a0tracks like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/rtW1S5EbHgU?si=MlD5duU1oWx2VOJg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Truth<\/a>,\u201d which connects directly to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Love Supreme.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> Chance The Rapper<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cBlessings\u201d is an openhearted and blissful exploration of gospel music in the truest sense. Likewise, <strong>Esperanza Spalding<\/strong> draws inspiration across decades, cultures and musical genres to bring Coltrane\u2019s civil rights concerns to the modern world on her loving history lesson \u201cBlack Gold.\u201d Vocalist <strong>Gregory Porter<\/strong> has an urgent sense of purpose that reconnects directly back to \u2018Trane\u2019s protest era.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/0CLbmkYmQIWiEwnsbOkLpd\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/6ZNUZZzaXBpRc81STz9yXl\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/2VQc9orzwE6a5qFfy54P6e\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kamasi Washington - Truth (Director&#039;s Cut)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rtW1S5EbHgU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like John Coltrane, <strong>Herbie Hancock<\/strong> was another Miles Davis disciple whose spiritual concerns, quiet intensity, and loving nature outweighed Miles\u2019 cool, wall-offed persona. There is a direct line between Miles\u2019 introspective <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kind of Blue<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Coltrane\u2019s expansive <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Love Supreme<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Hancock\u2019s macrocosmic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maiden Voyage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Likewise, the brilliant Coltrane devotee <strong>Charles Lloyd<\/strong> walked away from rock-level stardom in the 1960s to travel a more meaningful, less materialistic path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1970s, a few artists bridged the gap between today\u2019s sounds and Coltrane\u2019s era. Chief among them was <strong>Stevie Wonder<\/strong>, who carried on The Beatles, Ellington, and Coltrane\u2019s ability to endlessly experiment while retaining a sizable following. While Wonder also preached \u2018Trane\u2019s positive, spiritualist message, <strong>Joni Mitchell<\/strong> took a pinch of Miles\u2019 saltiness to create a stunning experimental body of work that weaved the advanced harmonic language of modern jazz with folk-rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of today\u2019s most successful, and creative artists, are infused with Coltrane\u2019s spirit. <strong>Steven Ellison<\/strong>, AKA <strong>Flying Lotus <\/strong>(the grand-nephew of late jazz pianist <strong>Alice Coltrane<\/strong> and of John Coltrane; and the grandson of late singer-songwriter Marilyn McLeod), takes electronic music and hip-hop out to the furthest reaches of the astral plane. <strong>Mos Def<\/strong> changed his name to <strong>Yasiin Bey<\/strong> and walked away from the commercial mainstream for a purer artistic life. <\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/7dCjDH7sguahH3kIpAXlJP\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/1T3q2fOu4xhy4VwadR88mJ\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/3xKsf9qdS1CyvXSMEid6g8\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Talib Kweli, Frank Ocean<\/strong>, and <strong>Anderson .Paak<\/strong> show that personal integrity can work with a clear-eyed rendering of the beauty and the ugliness of modern American life. On the jazz end of things, young musicians such as <strong>Jason Moran<\/strong>, <strong>Ambrose Akinmusire<\/strong>, and <strong>Christian Scott<\/strong> expand the template of Coltrane by also drawing influence from the pop music that came after him.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Anderson .Paak - The Dreamer (feat.
