As we learn in the film, 94% of agricultural seed varieties have vanished over the last century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The critics of industrial farming practices featured in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEED<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> attribute variety loss to genetic modification and the cultivation of monocrops. With a growing number of U.S. states relaxing cannabis prohibitions, what will become of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the world\u2019s most popular narcotic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seeds as the marijuana growing industry expands? Spare a moment this 4\/20 to consider the weed seed.<\/span><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b>From 4\/20 to 24\/7<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the legalization of marijuana reaching an eighth state this year, entrepreneurs are embarking on a \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green rush<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d around 4\/20. The holiday that began as a counterculture movement is now a $40 billion dollar business. In Colorado alone, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marijuana sales will top $5 million a day between April 15th and the 20th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Our perspective is 4\/20 is a real holiday \u2014 no smaller than St. Patrick&#8217;s Day or Halloween,&#8221; Eddie Miller, CEO of Invest in Cannabis, an aspiring Alibaba platform for the cannabis industry, \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told Vox in 2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Silicon Valley of weed, better known as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Emerald Triangle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which grows its plants <em>au naturel<\/em> in the good ol\u2019 outdoors and has for years been the epicenter of weed production in the US, is now competing with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corporate growers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pursuing a far more scalable and efficient farming process: cloning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>IT\u2019S ALIVE (or rather&#8230; IT\u2019S LIT)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in the 1990s, Scottish scientists caused some freak-outs when they cloned <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dolly the sheep<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But cloning has been a part of nature through asexual reproduction since <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the genesis of life<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, prevalent among grasses, onions, potatoes, and strawberries, bacteria and more. There\u2019s even a reference to cloning in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bible (Romans 11:17, 24)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<pullquote class='left'>Cloning modules consume the same amount of energy as 29 refrigerators.<\/pullquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among horticulturists, cloning is often preferred to sowing fertilized seeds and waiting for genetically diverse plants to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">germinate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 the (lengthy) process of a plant emerging from the dormancy of said fertilized seeds. With the domestication of vegetables dating back to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5,000 B.C.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was only a matter of time before cloning was picked up by the cannabis industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCloning is crucial for [cannabis] growers looking for consistency in their genetics,\u201d says veteran grower Allie Beckett, author of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the Grass Grows<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSeeds may be more vigorous growth-wise, but they are often unreliable in terms of phenotypes [physiological traits]. Cloning guarantees the preservation of your genetics \u2014 it can be a finicky process, but it is absolutely a necessary one.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growers are becoming expert breeders thanks to cloning,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating varieties of strains<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by identifying which of them have the most favorable cannabinoid composition. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From there, they snip branches off the &#8220;mother&#8221; plants, plop them into a pot, and wait for them to grow into, well, pot, eliminating the entire process of seed germination and the amount of care needed to make sure the seeds get to that point. The mother plants\u2019 severed limbs form roots.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15182\" style=\"width: 568px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/pineapple-express-2ublxSsXN756\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15182\" class=\"wp-image-15182 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/pineapple-express-2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via GIPHY<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since child plants have the same cannabinoid component levels as their mothers, a clone will bear the exact same ratio of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the psychoactive compound that determines the type of high you get) to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the the non-psychoactive compound with medicinal applications like anti-inflammation, anxiety reduction, memory boosting, and more).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPatients wanted\/needed a consistent flower that could help in the same fashion every time they used it,\u201d Colorado dispensary owner Kris Fowlkes told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kindland<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a seeds versus clones debate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year. \u201cThis spurred us to begin selecting our best phenotype from the strains we grew from and maintain that one expression of the strain so that our patients knew exactly what to expect every time they saw that strain &#8230;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being able to trade and breed the best specimens without the hassle of propagating hundreds of seeds sped up the process substantially.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growers expend\u00a0considerable effort\u00a0balancing THC and CBD to produce <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a variety of highs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for different recreational and medical uses.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15164\" style=\"width: 365px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15164\" class=\" wp-image-15164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PINEAPPLEEXPRESS.png\" alt=\"Pineapple Express (the labradoodle of marijuana), a Sativa-dominant hybrid strain made from Hawaiian Sativa (labrador) and Trainwreck Sativa-dominant hybrid (poodle), is a popular strain growers frequently clone for its tropical fruit smell and high THC that produces a long lasting, energetic high.\" width=\"355\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dipsy.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PINEAPPLEEXPRESS.png 994w, https:\/\/dipsy.pbs.org\/independentlens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PINEAPPLEEXPRESS-300x252.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15164\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pineapple Express (the labradoodle of marijuana), a Sativa-dominant hybrid strain made from Hawaiian Sativa (labrador) and Trainwreck Sativa-dominant hybrid (poodle), is a popular strain growers frequently clone for its tropical fruit smell and high THC that produces a long lasting, energetic high.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Drawbacks of Cloning<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because speed to market and consistency demand stable growing conditions (on top of the punitive risk of growing in regions with legal restrictions), operations remain largely indoors, which <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduces significant environmental impact<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For every pound of marijuana grown indoors (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22 million every year in the U.S.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), 4,600 pounds of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. That\u2019s equivalent to 3 million cars. Indoor growing operations <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consume 60 million gallons of water a day<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the same amount of energy as 29 refrigerators per cloning module. Nationwide, this business as a whole uses <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the power of seven large power plants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about the energy it would take to power 1.7 million homes. If growers are careless and snip branches off a mother plant that has a virus, the time, energy, space, and water put towards that genet, e.g. a family of clones all living in proximity to the original mother plant, are ultimately wasted. While clones root from stems, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seeds produce a tap root<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is more resilient and less susceptible to infection. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But what about the end product?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back to Kris Fowlkes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">via the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kindland<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> debate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cI have never been able to tell if a bud is from seed or clone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Independent Lens doc SEED: The Untold Story, biodiversity evangelists travel the globe in search of as many seed varieties as they can bank in their vaults before they disappear.
