So you hit the internet to read a few articles or (hey!) check out the DVD audio commentary that you&#8217;d totally forgotten about. And then there are the films so popular, powerful, and influential that they warrant their own feature-length documentaries<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 <\/span>many of which turn out to be superlative films in their own right.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;re talking about fantastic &#8220;making of&#8221; documentaries that focus on classic films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaws, Blade Runner, Apocalypse Now<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and, of course, <em>Troll 2<\/em>. So without further ado here are some highly recommended documentaries about feature films. [Which will be followed up by a piece on documentaries about<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/the-unmaking-of-stories-of-the-greatest-films-never-made\/\"> films&#8230; that were never made<\/a>.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/bestworstmovie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Best Worst Movie<\/a><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2009)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s proof that you can make a very good documentary about a <em>very<\/em> bad film, provided you approach the topic with a little bit of brains, heart, and insight. Ask any schlock expert to name the worst movies ever made and it&#8217;s a safe bet that 1990&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Troll_2\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Troll 2 <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will come up sooner rather than later. Not only is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Troll 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> absolutely terrible from stem to stern; it&#8217;s so outrageously bad that it earned its own cult following. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best Worst Movie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> covers the film, the phenomenon, and the people behind Troll 2, and it does so in highly entertaining fashion.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Best Worst Movie Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nPj_77MagUE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b><i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burden_of_Dreams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Burden of Dreams<\/a><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1982)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Werner Herzog&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fitzcarraldo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fitzcarraldo<\/a><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1982) is certainly more than fascinating enough in its own right (it&#8217;s about an eccentric tycoon who tries to build an opera house in the middle of an Amazon rain forest!) but be sure to follow it up with <a href=\"http:\/\/lesblank.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Les Blank<\/a>&#8216;s &#8220;making of&#8221; masterpiece. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burden of Dreams<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> captures not only the wild extremes to which Herzog would go to achieve his filmmaking goals, but also the plight of the local natives and how the film&#8217;s production impacted their lives. Truly fascinating stuff.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Burden of Dreams - &quot;The Birds Don&#039;t Sing, They Screech in Pain&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uL99NDUWJ0A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1080585\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner<\/a><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2007)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to &#8220;supplemental&#8221; materials produced specifically for home video releases, there are only a few all-star filmmakers, and Charles de Lauzirika is most assuredly one of them. This epic production runs nearly three-and-a-half hours, and it covers virtually everything a hardcore <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blade Runner<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enthusiast might need, from the painful production to the mediocre release to the film&#8217;s resurgence as a modern sci-fi classic. It&#8217;s all here. And yes, they cover the issue of &#8220;what&#8217;s different&#8221; in each version.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0119165\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Full Tilt Boogie<\/a><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1997)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say what you like about the films of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001675\/reference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Rodriguez<\/a> (I&#8217;d call him &#8220;inconsistent but wildly talented&#8221;) but you can&#8217;t say he half-asses anything. Not only does the man write, direct, produce, edit, but he also makes sure his best films receive a fan-friendly home video release. The <em>Sin City<\/em> mega-set is seriously fantastic, but it&#8217;d be really difficult to beat the behind-the-scenes insanity of Sarah Kelly&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Full Tilt Boogie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which covers the production of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0116367\/combined\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Dusk Till Dawn<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so astutely, it may actually be more entertaining than the movie itself. Well, not really. But it&#8217;s pretty great.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Full Tilt Boogie - Clip\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3D_J40QiIa8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0116479\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of Twelve Monkeys<\/a><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1996)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re a fan of Terry Gilliam&#8217;s wonderful sci-fi thriller <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 Monkeys <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 and come on, who isn&#8217;t? \u2014 you should take some time to check out this feature-length &#8220;all-access&#8221; backstage documentary. The directors (Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe) did such an outstanding job that Mr. Gilliam brought them back several years later, and the result was 2002&#8217;s equally excellent <\/span><b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0308514\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lost in La Mancha<\/a><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Hamster Factor (and Other Tales of 12 Monkeys)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ufyWxk5__YI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0102015\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker&#8217;s Apocalypse<\/a><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1991)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arguably the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citizen Kane<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of &#8220;making of&#8221; documentaries, this masterful document of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apocalypse Now<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> production was so personal, Francis Ford Coppola wasn&#8217;t all that hot to share it. George Hickenlooper and Fax Bahr&#8217;s film\u00a0has been included on numerous DVD releases, and still stands as one of the most fascinating, gripping, unflinching looks at filmmaking you&#8217;ll ever see. Some of the behind-the-scenes footage was shot by Coppola&#8217;s wife Eleanor (who also narrates). Let&#8217;s just say that a whole lot of things went wrong on the way to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apocalypse Now<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> becoming a classic, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hearts of Darkness <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">captures it all.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Excerpt: Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker&#039;s Apocalypse (Fax Bahr and George Hickenlooper, 1991)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H8_RkJC1XwY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3966544\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley&#8217;s Island of Dr. Moreau<\/a><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2014)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s no secret that the 1996 rendition of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0116654\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Island of Dr. Moreau<\/a><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suffered through a particularly terrible production<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 but we never really knew how insane things got until this funny, fascinating (and frustrating) documentary hit the scene. What should have been a big step up for indie darling <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Stanley_(director)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Stanley<\/a> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hardware, Dust Devil<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) turned out to be a virtual career killer<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 and it sure seems like only a small portion of it was his fault. And while it&#8217;s certainly a shame that so many people got screwed over in the process of creating an\u00a0epic turkey, this great documentary now stands as a silver lining of sorts.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley&#039;s Island of Dr. Moreau - Official Trailer - (2015)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0y_wLNe15x0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1510985\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy<\/a><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2010) and <\/span><b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2396421\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th<\/a><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2013)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you grew up on these franchises as a kid (cough cough) or you&#8217;re a new fan still savoring the scary bits and the silly stuff, you could do a hell of a lot worse than to supplement the experience with these massive retrospective mega-docos. These ones are made by fans, for fans, but they&#8217;re also really well-made, which helps a whole lot.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy - OFFICIAL TRAILER\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/js_hu0iPyM8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History OFFICIAL TRAILER\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K8yxAIfkqyI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0469185\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Shark Is Still Working<\/a><\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2007)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coolest thing about this exhaustive and highly entertaining <em>Jaws<\/em> documentary is not just that it was made by hardcore <em>Jaws<\/em> fans, but also that it was professional enough to get picked up by Universal and included on the swanky Blu-ray release. There have been other high-quality<em> Jaws<\/em> documentaries over the years, but this one might just be the best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6MO2ACxKlBs<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did I forget one of your favorites?
