[<a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Women&#8217;s Day<\/a>, by the way, is March 8.] To celebrate women, we&#8217;ve compiled a list of just a few documentary\u00a0films (both <em>Independent Lens<\/em> films and others) about important and fascinating women, including a few available to watch online via PBS.<\/p>\n<p>[View all <em>Independent Lens<\/em>\u00a0films about women and girls\u00a0by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/films\/\">searching here under topic<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/films\/dolores-huerta\/\"><em>Dolores<\/em><\/a> <\/strong>told the previously undertold story of activist Dolores Huerta, who tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice. Huerta evolved into one of the most defiant feminists of the 20th century \u2014 and she continues the fight to this day, in her late 80s. It&#8217;s \u201cexuberantly inspiring\u2026 makes you want to march\u00a0<em>and\u00a0<\/em>dance.\u201d wrote David Talbot in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/news\/article\/Dolores-delivers-the-inspirational-jolt-we-11063956.php\">San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>. As of this writing it&#8217;s available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/dolores-jhnajm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PBS Passport<\/a> and to rent on various streaming platforms.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"INDEPENDENT LENS | Dolores | Teaser Trailer | PBS\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o0xWDmnfqlA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/solar-mamas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Solar Mamas<\/em><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is the inspiring story of a Bedouin mother who joins 30 other illiterate women learning to become solar engineers at the Barefoot College in India.\u00a0A review on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/mmw\/2012\/11\/film-review-solar-mamas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patheos<\/a>:\u00a0&#8220;As I mentioned in a <a class=\"ext-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/woodturtle.wordpress.com\/2012\/11\/04\/solar-mamas-on-the-independent-lens\/\" rel=\"external nofollow\">previous review<\/a>, what I absolutely love about this film is the absence of a narrative commentary. The women, and Rafea in particular, are given an unmediated platform to speak for themselves. Without even the addition of a soundtrack, the story unfolds naturally \u2014 and is, refreshingly, not a story about a man, an institution or a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/mmw\/2012\/10\/half-the-sky-documentary-reviewed\/\">Western saviour<\/a> swooping down on disenfranchised women ready to rescue them from their oppression. This is a story about women having the opportunity to do it for themselves and succeeding.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6514\" style=\"width: 811px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6514\" class=\" wp-image-6514\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/solarmamas-whm.jpg\" alt=\"From Solar Mamas\" width=\"801\" height=\"451\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From <em>Solar Mamas<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/revolutionary-optimists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Revolutionary Optimists<\/a>:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0In this rewarding film by\u00a0Nicole Newnham and\u00a0Maren Grainger-Monsen, it&#8217;s girls who are making history, in a marginalized Calcutta slum neighborhood. &#8220;Change may be elusive, <em>Optimists<\/em> confirms, but the will to make it blazes,&#8221; wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/2013-03-13\/film\/revolutionary-optimists-blazes-with-a-will-to-change-india-s-slums\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michelle Orange<\/a>. [Available to rent on-demand on Amazon and other sites.]<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zb41oBBkZuY<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/half-the-sky\/\">Half the Sky<\/a><\/em> <\/strong>and this\u00a0powerful series&#8217; acclaimed follow-up, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/path-appears\/\"><em><strong>A Path Appears<\/strong>;<\/em><\/a> based on Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn&#8217;s groundbreaking book. [DVD on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shoppbs.org\/product\/index.jsp?productId=13358537&amp;cp=&amp;sr=1&amp;kw=half+the+sky&amp;origkw=half+the+sky&amp;parentPage=search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shop PBS<\/a>; also streaming on Amazon.] The series, which travels\u00a0around the world to show us courageous people fighting back against the oppression of women and girls worldwide,\u00a0was called &#8220;beautifully filmed, alternately heartbreaking and inspiring&#8221; by <em>The New York Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide  Movement Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6JbWA-6GDn4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/invisible-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Invisible War<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>is a game-changing\u00a0investigative documentary about one of America&#8217;s most shameful and best kept secrets: the epidemic of rape in the military. The film was nominated for an Academy Award, and accomplished an enormous amount in raising awareness of the issue and working toward changing the way it&#8217;s handled by military law. [In fact you can read about its campaigns and achievements <a href=\"http:\/\/britdoc.org\/uploads\/media_items\/invisiblewar-web.original.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/strong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Strong!<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>[streaming on Amazon]\u00a0has &#8220;a universal appeal beyond the world of women\u2019s weightlifting,&#8221; wrote Amanda Rykoff on <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/espnw\/more-sports\/8198271\/espnw-documentary-strong-challenges-notions-fitness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ESPN<\/a>. &#8220;Haworth proves herself to be not only a champion competitor but also a compelling documentary subject, comfortable in front of the camera and in her own skin. Both the filmmaker and the subject hope that <em>Strong!<\/em> can provide women with a new image of physical fitness, strength and beauty, and also with the confidence to challenge themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Here are more great films (not <em>Independent Lens<\/em> but we love &#8217;em anyway) about women:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/pov\/chisholm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chisholm &#8217;72<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong><\/em>which aired on POV, is a skillful portrait of the Brooklyn congresswoman who mounted a long-shot campaign to become\u00a0President. &#8220;Hearing her speak her finely honed mind in unscripted, un-&#8216;handled&#8217;\u00a0terms is worth the price of admission in itself,&#8221; wrote David Sterritt in the <em>Christian Science Monitor<\/em>. [Streaming on Sundance Doc Club.]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CHISHOLM &#039;72 - Unbought &amp; Unbossed - POV 2005 | PBS\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x6zcf3CQkz4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<ul>\n<li><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2396566\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>20 Feet From Stardom<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong><\/em> Oscar-winning doc about longtime backup singers is, quite simply, a delight [streaming on Netflix and elsewhere].<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/films\/TheLifeandTimesofRosietheRiveter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is an oldie but a goodie. Connie Field&#8217;s lovely, important doc explores the influx of women \u2014 black and white, urban and rural, poor and middle-class \u2014 into previously male-dominated workplaces in World War II. &#8220;Consummately skillful in articulating vital political issues through a strong sense of humor,&#8221; wrote TimeOut.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/show\/makers-women-who-make-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MAKERS<\/a>:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Multi-part documentary series that tells the known and unknown stories of women in the areas of war, space, comedy, business, Hollywood, and politics. These stories share women\u2019s contributions to some of the most important moments in the history of our country and the world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-ogFXuTJlhQ<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1568150\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work<\/em><\/a> <\/strong>[streaming on Netflix and Amazon], and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2405792\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>[streaming on Netflix], both one of a kind women who broke ground in the entertainment field (and both sadly recently left us). Stritch was an uncompromising Tony- and Emmy Award-winning actress whose personality and talent shine through in this intimate documentary; Rivers was a sharp-tongued, sharp-minded comedienne who navigated through a male-dominated world for decades.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0107472\/combined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>[available on DVD from various retailers]\u00a0is a probing portrait of a\u00a0complex woman who was both a groundbreaking artist and yet aligned with the brutal Nazi regime for whom she made propaganda.&#8221;This movie is fascinating in so many different ways,&#8221; wrote Roger Ebert. &#8220;As the story of an extraordinary life, as the reconstruction of the career of one of the greatest of film artists, as the record of an ideological debate, as a portrait of an amazing old woman.&#8221; [Suggested\u00a0by\u00a0The Filmatelist (@Filmatelist) on Twitter.]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The films above are but a sampling of many excellent documentaries about women past and present.
