TeacherLine: Innovative Online Professional Development

PBS TeacherLine offers online professional development for teachers in math and technology integration. Combining both the latest Internet technology and local outreach through PBS stations, TeacherLine offers educators online learning opportunities, continuing education units and graduate credit, and access to exemplary resources.

PBS TeacherLine is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Key Components
Teachers can access free professional development opportunities by visiting TeacherLine's web site at http://www.pbs.org/teacherline/ and exploring the Virtual Mathematics Academy, the Community Center and the Resources areas. Learning modules and certificate program are offered for a nominal fee through TeacherLine partner stations.

  • Learning Modules: Learning modules are a series of media-rich online mini-courses in mathematics and technology integration. These mini-courses are developed by professional producers who are recognized as experts in the fields of mathematics and technology. The modules are led by trained online facilitators and emphasize learning-by-doing.

  • Certificate Program: TeacherLine and ISTE (The International Society for Technology in Education) are developing a certificate that teachers can earn by successfully demonstrating that they meet ISTE standards. This certificate will allow many teachers to meet their state technology standards. At the local level, TeacherLine allows schools, districts, and state departments of education to award certificates to teachers for completing one or more TeacherLine modules. Certificates can provide teachers with graduate credit, professional development units, and continuing education credit.

  • Virtual Mathematics Academy: A self-directed online resource for all grade levels, the Virtual Mathematics Academy allows teachers to investigate and apply the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Principles and Standards of School Mathematics, explore exemplary mathematics practices, and refine their teaching practices - on their own time.

  • Community Center: The online Community Center provides teachers with a forum to share ideas and dialogue beyond school or district boundaries. Teachers will find live chats with experts, discussion boards, articles, and links to resources.
