What is PBS LiteracyLink?

PBS LiteracyLink is a public broadcasting initiative that links underserved and hard-to-reach adults and their teachers to exciting new learning tools. LiteracyLink's mission is to provide quality adult basic education that is exciting, relevant, accessible and flexible. LiteracyLink also provides just-in-time, convenient and cost-effective staff development for adult literacy educators. LiteracyLink accomplishes these goals by using public television and the Internet to reach learners and teachers whenever they are.

Workplace Essential Skills
Workplace Essential Skills is a comprehensive instruction tool for the millions of adults who need to improve their workplace skills.

The system is ideal for adult learning and GED prep centers, one-stop skill centers, workforce development programs, continuing education, and business/labor centers. It features videos, workbooks, and web-based activities that introduce adult learners to the basic competencies necessary for taking the new GED exams and for succeeding in the workplace.

The series is practical in its approach: It teaches reading, writing, communication, and math skills in the context of how they are applied on the job. It also features strategies like teamwork and problem solving and application such as reading charts, estimating, and measuring.

GED Connection
GED Connection is a dynamic multimedia instructional package that prepares learners for the new GED exam and for the world beyond. It creatively combines video, workbooks and the Internet. The series uses and engaging documentary-style approach to instruction, with many real-life examples of how people use the skills and knowledge tested on the GED at work and in their homes and communities. GED Connection combines interviews with experts, learners, poets and scientists with documentary footage and informational graphics. The series is informative and exciting, even for curious, non-GED viewers.

Adult Literacy Educator: Other Services available for you from PBS LiteracyLink

  • ESL/CivicsLink
    A web-based staff development package designed specifically for adult education ESL teachers and programs. This project will launch in 2002.
  • Project Connect
    Supplemental Web-based instruction for intermediate adult ESL learners. This project will launch in 2003.
